Nearly every call we take about a chipped bath starts the same way: someone has looked at the damage, assumed the bath is finished, and started pricing up a new one. It is a fair assumption — nobody expects a bath to be repairable. But a great many chips, scratches and suitable cracks can be dealt with properly in place, and the bath goes on doing its job for years.
The bath itself is rarely the expensive part. The cost and the upheaval sit in everything around it: tiling that has to come off, panels that will not go back the same way, plumbing that has to be broken into, flooring that gets damaged on the way out. Repairing the damaged area leaves all of that alone.
We will not pretend every bath can be saved. Some cracks have gone too far, some baths are not properly supported, and occasionally the sensible and safe answer is a new bath. We assess each one on its own merits and tell you straight which it is — that is the only way this trade works long term.
What we repair
Chips are the most common reason people call us. A dropped shower head, a tap fitting or a tile catching the rim takes a piece out of the surface and exposes the material underneath. Where the bath is otherwise sound, the chip is rebuilt in layers, shaped back to the original contour and colour-matched to blend with the surrounding finish.
Some cracked acrylic baths can be repaired and some cannot. Hairline surface cracks and localised stress cracks in a well-supported bath are usually good candidates. A crack running through a flexing, poorly supported or split base is not, and we will say so rather than take the work on.
Scratches from cleaning, bath boards, non-slip mats and general use dull the surface long before the bath is worn out. Localised scratching is refinished and polished back so the sheen matches the rest of the bath.
Older enamelled steel and cast-iron baths chip down to the substrate, which then marks and rust-stains around the damage. The plumbing has to be broken into and made good again. In a flat or an occupied rental, that means the bathroom is out of use for days rather than hours.
A repair to a sound bath avoids all of that. We work in place, the surrounding finishes stay where they are, and in most cases the bathroom is back in use shortly after we leave once the surface has cured.
Where repair is not suitable — a split or unsupported base, movement in the bath, damage that would return quickly, or anything we consider unsafe — we say so and recommend replacement. We would rather turn a job down than fit a repair that does not last.
